Poughkeepsie itself is somewhat of a mess. The inner-city is old and not well-kept. During the 90s, much of the industry that proliferated in the area collapsed and that left Poughkeepsie deeply deprived, the public schools and other resources desecrated. Things are slowly getting a little better though, as businesses are gaining greater opportunity again. At least, that's what it feels like. There's tons of good food and many of the suburb areas are beautiful. Still, stay away from Main St. and a fair amount of the North side of town is still dangerous.

In our neighborhood, we fell very safe. The town police headquarters are not far away. However, we live close to the border between the town and the city. This summer we did see an increase in assaults and weapon-related deaths in the city of Poughkeepsie. The city police department has initiated additional community policing initiatives to combat the issues and encourage neighborhood fellowship.

I feel fortunate to have grown up in the area that I did. As I get older, I realize that my hometown is diverse and unique. There are areas that are busier, like the city of Poughkeepsie with shops, clubs and restaurants. However, we also are also have areas with farms, hiking trails, and waterways. We are close enough to New York City, or the Adirondacks for a day trip. There really is something for everyone. If I had to go back and choose, I would love to grow up here all over again.
