Most would say that Athens, GA is a college town and to be fair it is. However, I have found that there is so much more to Athens than the downtown bars. Of course, the music scene is world renowned owing to the fame of the B-52s and REM. Yet, remarkable talent abounds in the spoken word, visual arts, comedy, and larger music scene. Interestingly, the rap scene is untapped and brimming to burst. Truly, one doesn't need to travel to Atlanta to find some righteous and bouncin' hip-hop. What's more is that Athens is home to some truly inspired active lifestyle culture; hiking, biking, climbing, circus-arts, running, mixed martial arts, yoga, crossfit, and so on. Indeed, the cycling here is on point! One of the coolest things to be a part of is the Twilight Criterium which is a nighttime pro-cycling race held every spring in downtown Athens. Without a doubt, if you are willing to seek for it, Athens has a vast and varied culture waiting to be explored!

This is an amazing city with a lot to offer aside from the college town. There is a dominant population of students within a radius surrounding the university, but drive for 10 minutes and you'll find a town with hidden gems, amazing beauty, and incredible, individual non-chain business (often started by UGA grads). The entire city shuts down for "Saturdays", so if you don't want to join in the festivities, you'll need to head out of town for the weekend. But if you're into a fun, uniting, passionate crowd of 96,000 people in Sanford Stadium, just practice your "Go Dawgs" and join the party!

I truly do love Athens. It is a great town! Although some areas around the city are a little more rough than others, I would certainly live here another year. I wouldn't take back my experience here in Athens for anything. It's almost as if every college student should get to experience a place like Athens. And even for those who aren't in college, it is still a great town for all ages. Between the Classic Center located downtown holding many events, the Foundry holding concerts, and of course, the football games are a must!
