Belle Fourche is a small town western community. Growing up, I never felt unsafe. Crime rate is low. It was nice to see someone you knew everywhere you went and nearly everyone was very friendly. Being in a rural community, commutes were not an issue for traffic. However, sometimes distance from the homes of ranchers and wives to town is quite the commute. The townspeople were so supportive of the students and sports teams in the community. The community fundraised money for scholarships for each senior in the high school who completed so many volunteer hours in the community. I was so ready to go out and see the world when I graduated high school, but I am now so much more thankful for that small town culture I grew up with and look forward to coming "home".

So much to experience and see; endless things to do. We are home to the Badlands National Park, Mt. Rushmore, State Parks, Chief Crazy Horse Monument, Caves, fishing, boating, swimming and hiking. Over the July 4th holiday Belle Fourche hosts the Black Hills Round-up professional circuit rodeo, complete with a 4-day carnival, and awesome fire works display. Nearby is historic Deadwood, full of history and gambling. The tourist guide books are full of activities for all ages to enjoy. We have numerous campgrounds, and hotels to choose from as well.

For the most part it is safe area. I would not choose this area to raise my grandchildren if I had to do it over again; they both suffered through bullying, and rejection. Stronger consequences need to be administered, bullies need to be held accountable for their actions - most kids live in fear of retaliation if they tell. Understand that bullying is a nationwide issue that needs to be seriously addressed. Small town living is great for quietness, and being uncongested, but would like a few more opportunities for citizens of all ages.
