We were in business for 33 years in Galesburg. Galesburg was a nice town when we purchased the business. However, when Maytag left and the City Fathers didnt want any industry like Pella Windows and VW, it went down hill. To grow and to be a viable community you have to have some industry, not robots. You have to have people that will purchase the product you have to sell, and they have to make more money then the minimum wage. It is a shame, I'm from Macomb and Pella Windows is doing very well. VW went to Tennessee they are also doing well. Galesburg was once
a thrieving community. Its very sad to me.
a thrieving community. Its very sad to me.
Crime ridden, constant fights especially in public schools, rape and domestic violence is high here, and within the past couple years the gun violence has gotten terrible, constant shootings and the homicide rates have went up. The kids here have unfortunately adapted to it! The drug problem is awful, almost everyone you know is a methhead anymore. Not a place I’d want my children to live for sure.
Galesburg is a pretty average town. I've lived here my whole life, and it's a good mixture between a "small" town and a larger city in terms of access to resources. There's about the same number of conservative people as there are liberal people, and while there aren't a large number of minorities, I have not heard of anybody being publicly discriminated against. There is an active NAACP chapter and PFLAG chapter. One thing that is unfortunate is that it is not a wealthy community, as a significant amount of the population lives near or below the poverty line. This leads to things being underfunded and a lot of unfinished projects. On the other hand, our public schools get a decent amount of state funding.
