Pikeville Reviews
Rating 4.3 out of 5 43 reviews
Pikeville is a very run down small town. There are a few restaurants but they are of very poor quality. For grocery stores, you have Walmart and Food City, that's it. No other retailers either. Nightlife is non-existent and there is very little to do.
My experience here at Pikeville is rather surprisingly good, a lot better than what I expected when I first moved here. The area I lived at before I moved here wasn't the best. It was run down and the majority of the buildings there were abandoned and businesses weren't as big as anywhere else. When I moved to Pikeville though, I was shocked to see how such a small town could be as vibrant and unique. I like how Pikeville is a tourist attraction during the Spring with events like Hillbilly Days, the people here are nice and there are little violence and crimes going on. The only problem I would have with Pikeville is how small of a town it is, if it was more expansive then I feel like it would draw more and more tourists in, and even residents. Overall, I appreciate spending what time I've spent here and I think people outside of Pikeville would like it.
The town is and has been progressive in a bleak and desolate area. The coal mining industry, and the lumbering industry before it, wrecked the environment and exploited the people and killed many, including my father-in-law. Read Harry Caudill’s Night Comes to the Cumberlands for more about the former and view Barbara Copple’s 1976 film Harlan County, USA for the latter.
